In 1949, a group of community leaders in Grand Rapids founded the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan. They believed an organization dedicated to international topics and American foreign policy issues was necessary in order to combat the isolationism in this area following World War II. Since then, the World Affairs Council has been dedicated to educating people in western Michigan about other countries, cultures and regions of the world, as well as providing a forum for discussion of critical foreign policy issues facing this country.

On-Going Programs:
Saturday Morning Lecture Series: intense year-long study of one region/culture/country.
The Great Decisions Lecture Series: our most prestigious lecture series. Eight American foreign policy issues are studied for eight weeks in February and March.
Dinner/Cultural Series: three dinners highlighting cultural and culinary experiences from various regions of the world.
Lecture First! Series: a potpourri of international topics, designed for members with busy schedules.

Special Announcement:

Ambassador L. Paul Bremer, former Special Envoy to Iraq will be the Council's 55th Anniversary Dinner speaker on Monday October 25, 2004. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity!
