A Tribute to Wilbur George “Dub”
Jacques (April 2, 1917- June 7, 2004)
Some of Dad’s stories include the following:
When he was a child they used to go out into the river with a make shift diving helmet. He never would let me swim in the river because he said it was dirty when he was a child and it was worse now. Anyway, they would put this helmet on their head and go into the river and then someone on shore would use a bicycle pump to pump air to the person under the water. One time someone came along and scared them off and he was down there with no one pumping air and he had a rough time coming up.
He never wanted to compete with the Red Lion another local restaurant that
specialized in hot dogs, so he never sold hot dogs. When Jacques Olson came
along, they would come in to eat often but all Jacques wanted was hot dogs, so
dad would have hot dogs just for Jacques. Loretta would cut them part way
through on one side and put them into the deep fryer and put them on a
Dad used to whistle all the time. He had the best whistling I have ever heard. You always knew when he was coming home when he came onto the porch whistling. Customers used to hear him whistling around as he worked at the restaurant also. Mom said that just lately he started whistling again. He stopped when Merle got sick.
Dad and I were about the only ones who could cut cake and get it on the plate in one piece. All the waitresses would wait for dad to come out of the kitchen so they could ask him to cut the cake. The first piece was especially tricky, plus at that time is was usually still warm so it really crumbled when it was cut.
Dad never liked getting dressed up. At the restaurant he always wore a white shirt and a tie, but at home he wore a sweat shirt and blue jeans (way before they were popular). One day he walked out into the back yard with his shirt and tie on and the dog barked at him.
He had a paper route from the time he was 7 years old. All his brothers and sisters also had routes. Dad supplied all the sugar for the household with his money from the paper route and with the extra sugar, he would make fudge. He loved fudge. I did not know he loved fudge. I only knew about all the peanut butter he ate. He would eat it on anything from old toast, milk, and sugar to just a sandwich. They would buy it in great big tubs from St. Laurence Brothers.
Another story about the paper route was that he would buy a
Allan said that as a boy he would carry him over large puddles and difficult spots when they when hunting. He took Allan hunting and taught him all about hunting. He was a great big brother.
They had a dog that could actually climb trees. They had a terrible time keeping him in the yard because he could climb right up the fence and into the neighbor’s yard.
When grandma used to make a sheet cake everyone would sneak in and cut a sliver from the side of the cake about ½ inch wide. By the time it was ready to be eaten there was only about half the cake left.
