The Housesmithe
My
credentials,
affiliations, and memberships include:
My name is Randy Aldering,
and I am the inspector for Housesmithe Home Inspection. Here is a brief
history of "the Housesmithe."
My interest in houses,
mechanical things, and construction began when I was young, and as I
grew up I was frequently helping around the house with projects and
maintenance. I studied landscape architecture, electronics and drafting
in
junior high and high school. This interest remained with me,
despite diversions to aeronautics and emergency medicine. These
diversions were helpful though, in that they created a broader
understanding of mechanical things and science, and how things work
together, and a methodical and disciplined approach to evaluating and
problem solving. In the mid to late1980's, I began working part-time in
residential and commercial home repair and maintenance. By 1997, The
Housesmithe Company began as a full-time residential home maintenance
and repair company.
My first fee paid home
inspection was performed in 1998, and that same year I obtained a
Michigan Residential Builder License. By January 1, 1999 home inspection became
my sole professional pursuit. I have performed hundreds of home
inspections in Michigan's great south-west since then, and have consulted with home owners on house
problems, including water penetration issues, mold, structural
problems, construction defects, and safety issues. The work is challenging and enjoyable
to me.
If you are a home buyer,
or thinking of purchasing a home, it is important to have a home
inspection. The stories that fall under "I should have had an
inspection" are too numerous to share here. Consider the purchase price
of the home, and you will find that for the average priced home, the
investment in an inspection will be less than 0.3 percent of the
purchase price. Even if you find the house that you want for as little
as $100,000.00 and pay $500.00 for a home inspection, that is less than
1% of the purchase price of the home. The value of the home
inspection will exceed the fee many times over. A thorough
inspection could potentially save tens of thousands of dollars!
Finding an independent home
inspector who answers only to you,
the client, and who respects the principle-agent relationship between a
buyer-client and the home inspector, is absolutely important!
It is the foundation of obtaining an honest and thorough
inspection, which is the best
choice for
you. Stories of "bad home inspections" abound. The warning
"buyer beware" applies very much to real estate transactions. Do
not be swayed by low cost, quick and speedy inspections, or inspections
by persons who are not looking out for your interests.
