On February 4, 1979, 37 men met in St. Catherine’s Church in Algonac to become part of the worlds largest charitable non-profit, fraternal benefit society. One of which helps Catholic families grow in their faith and defend their beliefs. At that time these 37 men formed, what is now known, the Algonac Council No. 7227 Knights of Columbus.   The Algonac Council is one of 12,000 Councils throughout the world and has 1.6 million members.

The Knights of Columbus pride themselves on the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

The Algonac Knights of Columbus is highly visible in the community with their efforts in assisting the mentally retarded citizens through their annual “Tootsie Roll Drive” held in the spring, one week before Easter.

In the beginning the Algonac Knights’ held their first meetings in the St. Catherine's School cafeteria and within a year moved to St. Clair River Drive in the building across from what is now the Seafarers Hall. After a few short years the members purchased property on Mill St. and Marsh Roads where the first phase of the new K of C Building was erected.  This building effort was accomplished by the member's many talents in construction. Later a Club Room was added and now the finishing touches are being made to the expansion of the kitchen facilities and storage rooms along with a new circular drive that leads to the new entrance to the facility. Again most of the work has been done by the membership.

The Knights of Algonac continue to support both the Catholic Community and the Algonac/Clay area community through their contributions to the needy. Some of the many charities that are assisted is the Boysville Program in Michigan, Clay Township Fire Department, Algonac Schools, the Right to Life Campaign, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, St. Catherine’s school and parish and Vocations.

The Algonac K of C has entered this new millennium with growth in it’s membership, (at the present, there are more than 135 members in the Algonac Knights of Columbus), and a “Dream” of continued support to those that are in need of their assistance. If the past is any indication of what can be done in a short period of time, the Knight’s will certainly be available to the community and their success will be certain.
