Uploading Web sites - Using FileZilla

This document will guide you through the process of uploading your personal or business web site to Iserv. If you need assistance, please call Customer Service at 888.64.ISERV or email info@iserv.net.

In order to transfer your files to the Iserv server, you will need to use FTP.

What is FTP?
FileZillaTM is a Windows ® file transfer application. It is uses the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to copy files between computers on the Internet.

Where can I get FileZilla?

FileZilla has no time limit and is free. To download FileZilla now from Sourceforge click here: http://FileZilla.sourceforge.net/.

How do I use FileZilla?

Download and install FileZilla. When you start the program, you will see a window similar to this:


Initial Setup

  • Click on the 'File Menu' option
  • Click on 'Site Manager'
 

  • In the window that appears, click on the 'New Site' button at the bottom

  • In the box that's already selected, change 'New FTP' site to "www.iserv.net"
  • Set the 'Host' to "www.iserv.net"
  • Change the 'Logon type' to "Normal"
  • In the 'User' field, enter your username
  • In the 'Password' field, enter your password
  • Click the circle next to 'Default'
  • Logon to 'Server'
  • To connect to the server, click on the 'File' menu option
  • Click on 'Connect to default site'
  • This will bring up a listing of on the left hand side of the window as well as the right.
  • Layout
    • The windows on the left represent the files and sub folders on 'Your Local System' or computer
    • The windows on the right represent the files and sub folders on the 'Iserv Web Server' or remote system
  • You should see a 'public_html' folder on the right
    • Files and folders stored inside the 'public html' folder will be viewable to others.
    • Files and folders not stored in the 'public_html' folder will not be viewable to others.
    • You will want to upload your personal webpage files to the 'public_html' folder.
Exception: There is one exception to placing all files inside the 'public_html' folder. If Iserv is hosting your domain name and commercial web site, you should have a virtual "www" account for hosting your web site. In this case, choose the 'virtual_html' folder along with a 'public_html' folder. Iserv domain name customers must place all of their files and additional folders inside the 'virtual_html' folder; this is associated and directly related to the domain name address in order to make the web site available to the world.
  • Copying Files
  • Single-click on the file to be uploaded (from the left-side of the screen)
  • Select the folder to upload the file to (on the right-side of the screen)
    • If you are uploading your personal webpage - double-click on the 'public_html' folder icon
    • If you are uploading a site for your Iserv domain name - double-click on the 'virtual_html' folder icon
  • The right-hand side of the screen, will now display the contents of the folder to which you are uploading the file
  • Drag the file that is uploading from the left-side of the window to the right-side of the window
  • After the copy is complete - Click 'Refresh' (just under the menu bar) to see a current list of files on the remote server
  • You should now see your file in both windows
  • When you are done copying files - click the 'File' menu option
  • Click 'Disconnect'
  • Close the window to close the program
