General Troubleshooting & Frequently Asked Questions

Many Internet service issues can be resolved using these simple do-it-yourself tricks:

Dialup

1. Reboot your computer

2. Check the phone line

  •
    • Is there a dial tone?  If there is no dial tone, check the phone cords and call your phone company.

3. Check the modem

  •
    • Did you hear the modem dialing or connecting to the Internet?  Try to reconnect or redial the modem.

4. Check the firewall

  •
    • If you are successfully connected to the Internet but cannot view web sites, turn off the firewall and attempt to use the Internet.  If you are able to use the Internet without the firewall, contact your firewall software provider for help on preventing firewall-Internet interference.

Broadband (DSL)

2. Check the equipment

  •
    • Turn off the modem and router for at least 15 minutes.  Turn the equipment back on and restart the computer.

3. Check the firewall

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell how many hours I've been online this month?
Go to Manage Your Account, enter your username and password.  Then click on 'View your usage report'.

How can I make changes to my account information?

To change your billing address, telephone number or credit card information, go to Manage Your Account.  Enter your username and password, then click on the appropriate option.

Does Iserv disconnect dialup users after a certain length of time?

Iserv disconnects dialup customers after 16 hours of continuous connect time or after 15 minutes of idle time.
If you are getting "bumped off", it may be your modem or telephone line.
  • Modems with outdated drivers and firmware are the most common cause of disconnection.  Updating your driver and firmware is especially important if you have a Winmodem, HCF, HSF or Soft modem.  Drivers and firmware can often be downloaded from the computer or modem manufacturer's web site.
  • A noisy phone line is another common cause of disconnection.  Any noise on a phone line will dramatically reduce the speed and reliability of your connection.  If you hear static, clicks or other noises while talking on the phone, you should contact your local phone company to have them run a test on your phone line.
