ARTICLES OF FAITH AND PRACTICE
OF
LINCOLN AVENUE BAPTIST CHURCH
- We believe in the verbal, plenary inspiration of the Holy bible. The
sixty-six books comprising the Old and New Testament canon were inerrant
in the original writings and thus constitute the believer's final
authority for faith and practice. (II Timothy 3:16-17; II Peter 1-19-21)
We believe that God has preserved His Word best through the King James
Version and therefore the KJV will be used for preaching and teaching.
- We believe in the existence of one true and living God (Deuteronomy 6:4)
We also believe in the doctrine of the Trinity, that is, within the unity
of the Godhead there exists three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit who
in essence are co-equal and co-eternal yet exercising distinct though
harmonious works.
- We believe in God the Father, commonly spoken of as the first member of
the Trinity. God is an infinite and perfect spirit who is the source and
support of all things. is perfect in perfections and purposes. (Genesis
17:1; Psalm 139:7,11; Acts 15:18; Ephesians 1:11)
- we believe in Jesus Christ, commonly spoken of as the second member of the
Trinity. He was and is the Eternal Son of God possessing both absolute
deity and perfect humanity. He was born of the virgin Mary, lived a
sinless life and gave His life on Calvary as sufficient sacrifice for the
sins of the whole world. He arose bodily from the grave, ascended back
into heaven and today is acting as the believer's advocate and Great High
Priest. (John 1:1, l5a; 9:6; Hebrews 4:15; I Timothy 2:6; Luke 24:39;
I John 2:1)
- We believe in the Holy Spirit. As the third member of the Trinity He is
not just an influence but a person equal in essence to the Father and Son.
He is actively involved in the world both in bringing the lost to Christ
for salvation. and in performing many wonderful ministries for the saints.
He also gives gifts to believers and seeks to fill the obedient Christian
giving him power for service. (Matthew 28:19; John 3:5, 16:8;
I Corinthians 12:7,13 & 6:19; Ephesians 4:30 & 5:18)
- We believe that the universe as well as mankind is a result of the direct
creative act of God. God created the universe and that which it contains
in six consecutive days 24 hours each. We reject all forms of evolution
whether theistic or naturalistic. (Genesis 1:1, 27; Colossians 1:16)
- We believe in the existence of angels. Angels are spirit beings created by
God for the purpose of bringing His glory and fulfilling His purpose in
the universe. They are more Powerful than human beings but are not all
powerful. (Psalm 148:5, 103:20; Hebrews 1:13-14)
- We believe that within the body of angelic beings there exists a group
which we refer to as fallen angels headed by Satan himself. Satan, also
known as the devil, is a real person created by God as the angel Lucifer
who because of rebellion fell from that lofty position. When he fell he
took part of the angelic host with him. Today these demonic hosts serve
Satan just as the good angels serve God. Satan is in the business of
opposing God and God's people in any way possible. His eternal destiny
has already been determined in the lake of fire. (Isaiah 14:12-14;
Revelation 12:7, 20:10; I Peter 5:8)
- We believe that man is a direct creation of God. Man who was created in
the image and likeness of God in a state of sinlessness or innocence did
by transgression fall from that lofty position and in so doing all of
mankind are now sinners by nature and choice. In the fall mankind incurred
the just condemnation of a Holy God resulting in both spiritual and
physical death. (Genesis 1:26-27, 3:1-l9; Romans 5:12-19, 2:10-12,23)
- We believe in the salvation of sinners. The basis or ground of our
salvation is the finished work of Christ on Calvary and the avenue of our
salvation is repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation
does not come by what we can do but by what He has done- It is offered
freely to all. We are simply the recipients of His matchless grace- When
we receive Christ as our Savior we are regenerated, justified, adopted,
sanctified, and some day we shall be glorified. When we are genuinely
saved we can never be lost because our salvation depends on His keeping
power and not on our own. (John 3:16; Acts 3:19, 4:12, 20:21;
Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5-7; Romans 5:1, 8:15; I Corinthians 5 6:11;
Romans 8:30; Philippians 1:6; I Timothy 4:10)
- We believe in the sanctification of the believer. Sanctification in the
Bible has the idea of the believer's being set apart for God's service and
thus becoming more like his Master. Sanctification can be viewed in three
aspects. positional sanctification occurs the moment a person is saved and
he dons the robes of Christ's righteousness Progressive sanctification is
the ongoing process whereby the believer becomes more and more conformed
to the likeness of God's Son. Perfect sanctification shall occur someday
when we go to be with the Lord (either through death or translation) and
we no longer have to contend with the old nature because we shall become
like He is. (I corinthians 1:2; II Peter 3:18; Philippians 3:20-21;
I John 3:2)
- We believe God has given spiritual gifts to Christians to serve In and
through the local church. Every believer has at least one gift and the
use of gifts is always for the ultimate purpose of bringing glory to God.
Among the gifts listed in the Bible we believe that the sign gifts
(miracles, speaking in tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy) were
temporary in nature and given to the church in its infant state before
the completion of the canon of Scripture. Therefore, we reject the modern
charismatic movement and the confusion which it has brought. (Romans
12:6-8; I Corinthians 12:1-11, 13:8; Ephesians 4:11-12)
- We believe in the church of Jesus Christ as God's institution for this age
to accomplish His purpose in the world. The church as the body of Christ
is comprised of all believers from Pentecost to the Rapture. Local
churches are visible expressions of the body of Christ meeting in a
particular time and place. Christ is the Head of the Church and the Word
of God is to be its source of authority. The local church is to be
comprised of baptized (by immersion) believers who meet together for
worship, fellowship, service, edification, and evangelism. Local churches
are to be led by men serving in the Biblical offices of pastor and
deacons. Local churches are to observe the two ordinances of baptism and
the Lord's supper. (Acts 1:5, 2:41-47: 1 Corinthians 12:13; Colossians
1:18; Galatians 1:2; I Timothy 3:2,8; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34)
- We believe that God has a plan and a program for the end of the ages. The
next event on God's prophetic calendar is the return of the Lord Jesus
Christ. We believe this return will be accomplished in two Phases. The
first phase called the Rapture of the church. It will be pre-millennial
and pre-tribulational and is an imminent event. After the Rapture, the
seven year tribulation will occur climaxed by the second phase of Christ's
return referred to as the Revelation. Following this will be the
Millennial reign of Christ culminating in the Great White Throne judgment
of the lost. After this comes the eternal state. We believe in the
conscious eternal punishment of the lost in hell and the blessed eternal
happiness of the saints in heaven. (I Thessalonians 4:16-17; Revelation
3:10, 6-19; 19:11-16; 20:1:6, 11-15; 21:1-8)
- We believe God has called believers to live a life characterized by
personal, family, and ecclesiastical separation. Personally we are to
refrain from all things that would defile us or bring shame to the name
of Christ which we bear. We are called to live a life characterized by
holiness and purity and to be an example of what the believer is to be
like to a watching world. Ecclesiastically we are called upon to refrain
from co-operation or alliances with groups which do not stand unashamedly
for the truths revealed in the Word of God. Thus. we cannot accept the
position reflected in the National Council of Churches in America. the
world Council of Churches, the Ecumenical Movement, Liberalism, Hyper-
Calvinism, Arminianism Neo-Orthodoxy, New Evangelicalism or the various
branches of the Charismatic Movement- We will not cooperate with any
organization or movement that is connected with apostasy, or places less
than primary emphasis on the authority of God. We believe cooperation
should be limited to those of like precious faith and practice.
(I Thessalonians 5:22; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 1 John 2:15-17; Romans
16:17; 2 John 9-10; 2 Corinthians 6:14-17; 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 14-15)
- We believe that civil government is of divine appointment for the
interest and good order of human society; that magistrates are to be
prayed for- conscientiously honored and obeyed; except in those things
opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 13:1-7)
- We believe in the sovereign selection of Israel as God's covenant people;
that she is now being disciplined because of her rejection of Christ; and
that she will be regathered in the Holy Land and saved as a nation at the
Second coming of Christ. (Ezek. 34:11-31; Dan. 12:1)
We believe this is the Biblical Position on the following issues:
- Marriage: We believe that holy matrimony was instituted of God and
sanctioned by our Lord Jesus Christ and should be held in honor by all.
This relationship should be between one man and one woman until separated
by death. Marriage between a believer and an unbeliever is forbidden.
Marriage between people of the same sex is forbidden. We also believe that
"living together" outside the bond of marriage is sinful, under any
circumstances. (John 2:1-11; 2 Cor. 6:14-18; Heb. 13:4; Romans 1:24-32;
I Cor. 5)
- Divorce and Remarriage: God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16). Since divorce is
only a concession to man's sin and is not a part of God's original plan for
marriage. all believers considering divorce should have the same attitude
toward divorce as does God. Notice that in Matthew 19:5-9, Christ teaches
that divorce is an accommodation to man's sin and is in violation of God's
purpose for the intimate unite of the marriage bond. (Gen. 2:24)
- The only Biblical grounds for divorce are: (1) fornication (an illegal
marriage-a marriage within the prohibited relationships of Leviticus
18:6-18. While "porneia" can be used in a broad sense in the New Testament
to refer to any kind of unlawful sexual activity, the Jewish setting,
historical background, and immediate context of Matthew 19:1-12 leads us
to conclude that Jesus was using the term in reference to incestuous
marriage. For example see (I Cor. 5), or (2) a non believing partner who
initiates the divorce due to incompatibility with a Christian, (I cor.
7:13-15)
- The two Scriptural alternatives for those who are divorced are
reconciliation or remain single. (1 Cor. 7:11)
- When a divorced person marries someone other than the original spouse
they commit adultery (Mark 10:11-12; Luke 16:18)- The sin of adultery
is self-destructive and brings reproach on one's name (Prov- 6:32-33).
This would hinder the spiritual effectiveness of any Christian.
- While God has made His plan for marriage clear, He is also willing to
forgive those who have violated His will if they acknowledge their wrong
and ask Him to forgive them, therefore, we should be willing to forgive
them also. (I John 1:9).
- The church has the responsibility to uphold the Biblical ideal of
marriage; therefore the person with a divorce in his background will be
restricted where the Bible restricts him (Pastor or Deacon) Other areas
of service would be considered as the occasion arises.
- Abortion: We believe that life begins at conception and therefore every
effort should be made to protect and preserve that life as a gift from God.
Since man was created in the image of God, every human life has worth.
The only legitimate choices are the choice of the un-born child to be given
the opportunity to be born and the choice of the man and the woman not to
conceive the child. Abortion and Euthanasia is murder (Gen. 1:26-28;
5:1; Exodus 20:13)
- Women's Movement: While we appreciate, respect, and even honor godly women.
we reject the modern Women's Movement as unscriptural. Positionally, God
placed the man over the woman. We reject the modern trend to ordain women
pastors and deacons as a violation of Biblical teaching. We believe that
godly, spirit-filled ladies will not be a part of this movement. (Genesis
3:16; I Cor. 14:34-35; I Timothy 2:11-14)
- Music: We believe that music should be used tor worship and edification,
not entertainment. It should stimulate the soul not the flesh. All music
should be doctrinally sound and bring honor to God. We reject the
"contemporary" songs with their weak message and their 'Rock" beat:
(Eph. 5:18-19; Col. 3:16; Ezekiel 22:26)
- Homosexual/Lesbian: Those who practice this sin are condemned by God:
therefore they cannot be members of our church while practicing this sin.
We oppose those who ordain them to ministry and use them in Places of
leadership. We do believe that it is our responsibility to witness to them
and try to win them to the Lord. God forgives those who repent.
(Romans 1:18-32)
